GAMEPLAY

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is set in Aionios, where two rival nations, Cebes and Agnus, wage an eternal war with soldiers who have a lifespan of 10 years. The story is about Eunie and Lantz, two childhood friends from Noah and Kebes, and Senna and Taion, two friends from Mio and Agnus. They decide to obtain the power of Ouroboros and work together to find safety. During this journey, they discover the secrets behind the eternal war and the true nature of their world.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 features an action-based combat system, where players control the current protagonist in real-time, with party members “auto-attacking” when enemies enter attack range. Unlike previous entries, players can switch characters during combat. Party members can use abilities called “arts” to deal with bonus damage or inflict status abnormalities depending on their position with the enemy. Each character has a class-based starting movement set consisting of different fighting styles and abilities, but all fit into one of her three primary roles. “Attackers” deal damage and use positional arts to increase damage or activate specific effects. And a “healer” who supports the group with heals, buffs, and debuffs.

A total of 25 classes are available for purchase in the base game. Performing role actions (drawing aggro for defenders, using positional arts for attackers, and placing field arts for healers) fills the character’s talent meter, and when it is full, the character uses talent arts. will be able to be released. Talent Arts are class-specific special moves that increase the strength of the class, such as: Dealing massive damage over a wide area, forcing all enemies to target you, fully healing your party, and more. In addition to experience points gained by defeating enemies, characters also earn class points (CP) that increase their class proficiency. Reaching certain Mastery Levels unlocks Mastery Arts that can be applied to other classes of hostile factions.

Players can also fuse Master Arts and Class Arts into Fusion Arts, which combines the characteristics of both arts into one. You can combine arts that cause the reactions “Break”, “Fall”, “Days”, “Burst”, “Lunch”, and “Smash”. To successfully perform an Art combo, the Break status must be applied to an enemy, followed by Topple. After this, the combo route can either go to Launch then Smash to deal massive damage, or Daze then Burst to temporarily purge an enemy of their Rage status and drop items. The defining battle feature added in Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is the Interlink system. Early on in the game, specific pairs of characters—Noah and Mio; Eunie and Taion; and Lanz and Sena—gain the ability to fuse into Ouroboros, larger forms that are invincible and have stronger Arts.

SETTING AND CHARACTERS

Set after the events of Xenoblade Chronicles (2010) and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (2017), Xenoblade Chronicles 3 takes place in Aionios, a world made up of merged locations from Bionis, the world of Xenoblade Chronicles, and Alrest, the world of Xenoblade Chronicles 2, where the nations of Keves and Agnus are at constant war. The world is divided into Colonies, each with its own giant mecha called a Ferronis, which is fueled by the life force of fallen enemy soldiers and trapped in a Flame Clock. The wars are fought by engineered soldiers with artificially limited lifespans of ten years, referred to as Terms. They fight to fuel their Colony’s Flame Clock and survive to the end of their tenth Term in hopes of receiving a Homecoming ceremony. Among both forces are “off-seers”, soldiers who play flutes in rituals to send off the dead.

The game features six main characters who have the power of Ouroboros, including two protagonists: Noah, a Kevesi off-seer accompanied by his childhood friends Lanz and Eunie; and Mio, an Agnian off-seer accompanied by her fellow servicemen Taion and Sena. The two groups are joined by their Nopon support members: Kevesi mechanic Riku and Agnian chef Manana.

Other major characters include the Vandham family, who lead a faction called the Lost Numbers that consists of Guernica, his daughter Monica, and granddaughter Ghondor; Melia Antiqua from Xenoblade Chronicles and Nia from Xenoblade Chronicles 2, who are the true queens of Keves and Agnus; and Moebius, an organization led by Z that manipulates the war between Keves and Agnus and is made up of powerful beings called Moebius that act as Consuls and are each identified only by a single letter.

The downloadable story expansion Future Redeemed is set centuries before the main game’s story and takes place in the Cent-Omnia region, an area of Aionios not explored in the main game. It follows the initial group of Ouroboros, which was formed after Consul N destroyed the original city. Similar to the main game, Future Redeemed consists of a party of six members. Matthew Van Dam is from the city and is traveling with her mysterious being named A to search for her sister Nael. Shulk and Rex, the main characters of Xenoblade Chronicles and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 respectively, are currently leading the Liberators against Mobius. Nicole and Glimmer, children of Shulk and Rex respectively, are unaware of their parentage and fight for Kebeth and Agnus, respectively. Other major characters include Panacea and Linka, Shulk and Rex’s respective apprentices. And Alpha, a being born from Alvis.

STORY

Keveshi soldiers Noah, Lantz, Eunie, and Nopon Riku are tasked with intercepting a mysterious airship and destroying its cargo. When they arrive at their destination, they encounter the Agnia army consisting of Mio, Sena, Taion, and Nopon Manana. A fight breaks out between the two groups, but Guernica Van Damme, the airship’s sole survivor, intervenes to stop her fight, claiming to know her “true enemy”. However, when Consul D attacks him and the two groups, he is forced to activate the smuggled Ouroboros stone and imbue Noah and Mio’s team with his powers. D is forced to retreat, and a mortally wounded Guernica instructs her team to head to the city of Swordmarch to find answers. After Consuls Cebes and Agnus order them to be hunted down, Noah and Mio’s team join forces to reach Swordmarch, destroying the Flame Clock along the way and liberating the colony.

The Queen of Cebes attacked the group with a weapon of mass destruction called the Annihilator, threatening to destroy the liberated colonies. This forces the group to detour to Kebes Castle, where they destroy Annihilator and discover that Kebes and Agnus’ soldiers are clones created to fight each other. They are then confronted by Consul N, a man physically identical to the Queen and Noah. The group defeats the queen, but it turns out that she is a fake robot. After escaping, the group encounters the Lost Numbers, a group led by Guernica’s daughter Monica. She shows them around the city. Its population consists of people with normal lifespans who are hostile to Moebius. Monica explains that Mobius orchestrated the war to obtain life energy from bloodshed in an endless cycle and that the true queens created the Ouroboros force to oppose them before going into hiding.

Monica orders the group to infiltrate the prison beneath Castle Agnus in order to rescue her daughter Gondor, who knows the whereabouts of the queens. The group plans a prison break but is betrayed by Lost Numbers’ Shania and ambushed by Consul M, a woman physically identical to N and his partner, Mio. The group is captured and taken to Castle Agnus for execution, and only Gondor escapes. There, Noah relives N’s memories and learns that N and M tried and failed to stop Moebius over countless lifetimes. When his Mio died, N accepted Faust’s deal with Moebius’s leader Z, in which they would both resurrect M and spend eternity with her in exchange for becoming Mobius. Noah and Mio are the reincarnations of N and M and are the embodiment of their hopes. On the day of her execution, it is revealed that M sacrificed herself and used her supernatural powers to switch bodies with Mio and die in Mio’s place.

The group banishes N, destroys the false Queen of Agnus, and awakens Nia, the true Queen of Agnus.D ambushes them and injures Nia, but the group kills him in the fight. Nia explains that the world has split into the parallel worlds of Bionis and Arrested in the past, and will inevitably merge again in an event called “Intersection”, destroying all life in the process. Melia, Nia, and the inhabitants of both worlds established communication and worked together to create Origin: Origin: is an ark that stores the data and memories of both worlds, as well as the souls of their inhabitants, and reboots them after the merger. However, Z captured Melia and kidnapped Origin for his own purposes, creating Aionios. The group raids Origin defeats N and frees Melia. They confront the manifestation, Z.
