The Mortuary Assistant is a 2022 horror game developed by DarkStone Digital and published by DreadXP. Set in 1998 in a small town in Connecticut, players control a newly hired assistant at a haunted mortuary. After earning your degree in mortuary sciences, you began an apprenticeship at River Fields Mortuary.

For several months, you have been learning the ropes of the embalming process and assisting the Mortician with daily tasks. However, one night, you are called in for an unexpected job that involves something unusual about the body, as well as something special about you.

The Mortician calls you, confirming the rumors that have been circulating and leaving you trapped in the mortuary. As you carry out your embalming tasks, you must also fight off demonic forces, using occult rituals to identify and banish them. In the process, you must uncover the haunting history of Rebecca Owens, the secrets of River Fields, and a sinister truth lurking just beneath the surface.

With a groundbreaking system that ensures every playthrough is unique and a gripping storyline that unfolds through multiple playthroughs, you’ll have to piece together clues to banish the demons and save your soul. With over 10 hours of content and plenty of hidden secrets to uncover, this is no ordinary job at the mortuary.

GAMEPLAY

Players control Rebecca, an assistant at a mortuary who embalms corpses under the watch of her boss, Raymond. Players must engage in the mundane aspects of this job while avoiding demonic possession in the haunted mortuary. This involves jump scares and puzzles. PC Gamer described it as “more or less a walking simulator with some haunted scenery”. It is played from a first-person perspective. Players must correctly identify which corpses are possessed, and the demon possessing them, and perform the correct exorcism to survive. This process is timed, as indicated by a set of Post-It notes to show the progress of the demon possessing Rebecca. It has multiple endings, and a new ending was added in July 2023. The story is procedurally generated, but the game remembers which vignettes the player has seen and shows different ones in each playthrough.

STORY

The player takes on the role of Rebecca Owens, a recent graduate from mortuary school, and a former heroin addict, who has begun working for a mortician named Raymond Delver at River Fields Mortuary. This mortuary has a reputation for the supernatural. Rebecca is asked to come to work while Raymond is not feeling well. Strange things start happening in the mortuary, and it is revealed that demons are possessing one of the cadavers.
