SEGA AGES Sonic The Hedgehog 2 is a re-release of the Sega Genesis title, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, developed by M2. It was released in February 2020 as part of the Sega Ages lineup for the Nintendo Switch. The game was first shown on the Japanese Sega Ages website as early as 2018, but it did not receive an indication for an official release date until 2020.

Sega Ages: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 includes almost all of the features from 3D Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The gameplay runs at a stable 60 FPS and has widescreen support (with borders or stretched).

Other returning features include the Level Select option, the display filters, and the ability to play either the Rev.01 or Rev.00 version (which the interface describes as “Japan” and “International” respectively).

HD vibration is also available and is used at times like when the player uses a Spin Dash, jumps on a Spring, or destroys an Item Box.

PLOT

The story takes place on West Side Island. According to legend, this landmass was inhabited by an advanced civilization whose people flourished by harnessing the powers of seven mysterious stones. However, in their hubris and greed, they took these stones for granted often, reducing their society to dust. All that remains nowadays are lush green meadows and deep memories.

It is within these same meadows that Sonic the Hedgehog is enjoying a few days off during an adventure of his. He finds the local creatures very friendly, especially a two-tailed fox who follows him wherever he goes. The fox’s name is Miles “Tails” Prower, and although he is not the most popular, he is aware that hanging around with the hedgehog would make him the coolest kid ever, having even mastered the Spin Dash eventually.

Suddenly, a massive explosion rings forth in a nearby forest, followed by a rising pillar of fire, with soot and rubble thrown everywhere around. When the flames die down, Sonic hears a familiar, high-pitched laughter echo from the forest. As it turns out, it was the voice of the infamous Dr. Eggman, who, through his passionate rantings, reveals that the hedgehog had inadvertently led him straight to West Side Island, which is the resting ground of the seven legendary Chaos Emeralds.

The doctor wants to get the gems to power his ultimate weapon: the Death Egg, with which he will achieve world domination. Knowing that he has to stop this diabolical scheme, Sonic sets out with Tails to defeat his nemesis. Sonic and Tails make their way through West Side Island, defeating Dr. Eggman various times along the way. Eventually, the two use the Tornado to reach the doctor’s Wing Fortress.

However, the biplane is attacked, forcing the hedgehog, who manages to get onboard the vessel, to continue alone. After the villain is defeated once more, he tries to escape to the finished Death Egg in space. With Tails returning in the Tornado.

Sonic manages to grab onto the scientist’s space rocket and ends up on the space station. There, he defeats Mecha Sonic and Eggman himself in his Death Egg Robot. In the aftermath, a chain reaction is triggered, causing the Death Egg to explode and forcing Sonic to escape.

NEW FEATURES

• Like Sega Ages: Sonic the Hedgehog, in addition to the returning Spin Dash, the Drop Dash from Sonic Mania is added and can be toggled on the menu.
• Knuckles in Sonic 2 is included, which allows the player to play through the game as Knuckles the Echidna.
• There are several modes to choose from, all work with normal Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Knuckles in Sonic 2:
• Original: Plays like the original Mega Drive version of the game.
• Ring Keep: From 3D Sonic the Hedgehog 2, where the player starts each Act with ten Rings and only loses half their Rings when hit.
• Super Sonic: The game starts with all Chaos Emeralds unlocked, allowing Super Sonic or Super Knuckles to be playable from the start, and gives the player 50 Rings at the beginning of each Act, allowing them to acquire their Super State right from the start. This mode is unlocked after clearing either Original or Ring Keep mode.
• A challenge mode is available where the player can compete for a high score as either Sonic or Knuckles in one of two challenges with their best scores being uploaded to an online leaderboard.
• Online rankings are available where players can compete in “Ring Chain Ranking” and challenge mode.
