Saltsea Chronicles is an adventure video game developed and published by Die Gute Fabrik. Set in a flooded, post-apocalyptic world, the game tasks players to control an ensemble cast of characters who must navigate an archipelago to rescue their missing captain. The game was released for Windows PC, macOS, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 5 on October 12, 2023.

It begins with the kidnapped Captain Maja, Saltsea Chronicles, the new narrative-driven adventure from acclaimed indie studio Die Gute Fabrik (known for Mutazione and Sportsfriends), embarks on a quest of your choosing. Captain Maja’s unconventional crew embarks on a mission to liberate their impounded vessel and orchestrate a daring rescue.

Here, you’ll unravel enigmatic conspiracies, make pivotal choices regarding destinations and crew investigations, and navigate a thrilling narrative replete with twists, challenges, and moments of joy.

In this waterlogged realm, marred by the infamous ‘Hoarders,’ memories of the pre-Flood era are a distant echo. Civilization has emerged anew, with fresh talents and technologies taking root in the remnants of the past, promising countless surprises. In Saltsea Chronicles, your guidance steers the entire crew’s path.

While investigating the captain’s disappearance, you’ll unearth hidden truths, mediate and resolve conflicts within the crew, and expand your ranks by welcoming others into your fold. Every chapter offers the opportunity to select the island for exploration and designate crew members for the expedition.

Your choices will shape the unfolding story, nurturing relationships, while creating or resolving tensions within the crew. With a rapid navigation system, you have the freedom to hop between islands, choosing between brief observations and deep conversations, all at various times of the day.

As you seek answers to the captain’s fate, document your journey in Murl’s Log and preserve your encounters in the Almanac as collectible stickers. Multiple playthroughs lead to divergent paths, each with profound consequences for your crew. At any point, you can return to a prior chapter and branch your save file to encounter new crew members, explore different communities, and unveil a captivating narrative.

GAMEPLAY

Saltsea Chronicles is an adventure game set in a flooded, post-apocalyptic world. The player, controlling an ensemble cast of characters, must sail to islands and investigate the mystery behind their captain’s disappearance. The game is divided into 12 chapters, with the player exploring an island in each chapter. In each chapter, the player must bring a designated character, and select a secondary crewmate to accompany them. Each island has its own unique culture and characteristics.

As players progress in the game, they will need to make various decisions (often binary) that may influence the narrative of the game. After completing a chapter, the player will return to the ship, where they can choose their next destination. The game features a branching save system that allows players to make alternate decisions. A story log is included to help players recall events happening in the game. Players also need to keep track of each crew member’s demands and requests as well as their relationships with fellow crewmates. The game also features an optional card game named Spoils.
