Dungeons of Aether is a 2022 RPG title set in the Aether universe. Development is being led by Nick “ampersandbear” and Ellian; music and sound design is being done by RESOFORCE; character design is being done by Andy Ayala and Marc Knelsen “elranno”; and Ian Flynn is handling narrative design for the story. It was described by Dan Fornace as an “exploration-based”, “turn-based roguelike” set in the Aether universe, particularly in the caverns below Julesvale.
Dungeons of Aether has four protagonists, all four of whom have been revealed (Fleet, Artemis, Slade, and Hamir). Originally slated for an October 2022 launch, the game was eventually released on Steam in February 2023, which was followed by a Nintendo Switch port in April. Dungeons of Aether is a turn-based dungeon crawler designed by Nick ‘ampersandbear’ Blackwood from the Aether Studios team. While Rivals of Aether is known for its real-time combat, Dungeons of Aether allows you to take things at your own pace – but it’s just as challenging! Every choice you make can lead you deeper into the dungeons or to an early demise. Will you carry out a treasure chest, or be carried out in a pine box?
GAMEPLAY
Dungeons of Aether’s gameplay is based on the system created by Ampersandbear for his entry into 2015’s 7DRL, Malleus Goblinficarium. It involves the use of different-colored dice for each action, where the player and enemy both choose from the given selection to decide their stats for the coming turn. The player is furthermore able to use items that will give them an edge when necessary. Dungeons are procedurally generated and “gruelingly difficult”, though it is implied that the Story Mode will have its own unique, consistent dungeon.
